Saturday at the Monterey Wine Festival at Monterey Custom House Plaza gave us yet another growth opportunity … this time involving a 30-second elevator pitch and subsequent radio interview to Mark Carbonaro of FOX NEWS RADIO 1460 AM & 101.1 FM
The morning had been a blur with dozens of attendees stopping by the C9 booth to sample our oils and vinegars, so I nearly missed this excellent opportunity to be on the radio.
Just as Mark was walking pass mybooth, I summoned up my courage, put on my winningest smile and extended to him a sample of my Spanish oil. To my surprise, he was delighted by my little elevator pitch about our local family farm and offered me a 5 minute slot in a live broadcast from the Monterey Wine Festival!
I frantically scribbled down some notes for the radio spiel about C9, walked over to the Fox Radio tent on wobbly legs. Mark is a pro - at one point when I completely blanked on the next topic, and like a gentleman, he covered for me with prompts and engaging questions that brought me back into the game. The interview was an incredibly scary and exhilarating experience!
Ok, enough personal growth story. The Monterey Wine Festival was a great success due to great management
by the organizers. Tina Curry and Chris Cannard of E2C Corp did an outstanding job of gathering a diverse and high quality group of wineries and eateries for us to enjoy. Check out all the exhibitors on CaliforniaFoodandwineguide.com - Cloud 9 is on pages 84 and 154.
One winemaker who caught my attention was Nicholas Elliott from Nicora Winery -- it was an absolute pleasure to meet this young and talented first generation winemaker and to sample the delicious wines....a true garagiste*. Keep your eye on this man in seasons to come!
Some other folks that I particularly enjoyed were:
- Hahn Winery - They have some wonderful wines under multiple brands, some made with grapes from San Antonio Valley (where Cloud 9 is located!)
- Pierce Winery - This is a small winery located in the San Antonio Vinicultural Appellation. Check out their tasting room on Cannery Row.
- The Forge of the Forest Restaurant - These guys put out 2000 delicious appetizers on Friday night that were devoured within 90 minutes flat! On Saturday, in the Clam Chowder Competition, The Forge won Best of Show !! Go visit this restaurant in Carmel - it is steeped in history and good food by Chef Jean Paul.
